The Year of the Monkey: WHITE LOTUS

Season 3 – Episode Two Review (*no spoilers here)

In Episode One, we were introduced to most of the main characters. Now, we will delve into their darker corners as the series unfolds. The season unfolds differently from Season One and Two which mainly dealt with exterior aspects of people’s lives like money, wealth, social position or work status. In this season, the characters will confront more of their inner spiritual lives and desires that drive them. The Monkeys are watching. They have a distinct presence in the series with depictions in art, sculpture and decorations. Their presence in the trees overlooking the resort is not unusual; they are worshipped and revered. Even the characters in the story begin to mention them. How they refer to them, is telling. I almost believe that the characters interactions will be a telling clue about them. Watch this ‘monkey’ space.

Identity is the Prison

The exploration of Buddhism and it relationship to the Thai culture is a major dynamic of the show. This episode begins with spa treatments; each character has their experiences and results as they go on their path to spiritual or sensual experiences. All the characters have a wardrobe identity from Upper Class Mom to Boho luxe style or the fashionista styles of the girlfriends and gals. The important distinction between the paid staff and guests is shown by their uniforms. This defines this separation of class. We also explore the cultural and spiritual aspects of Thailand and get to know the Thai people. Their fashion traditions, native styles expressed in the shape, color, textures of the fabrics are carefully curated.
