Paris and Luxury: A life worth Living
The Parisians were very clear on one thing: how to live a life worth enjoying. Nothing wrong with that. Here at this well curated exhibit, which showcases the collection amassed by Monsieur Getty, the 18th century lifestyle is carefully displayed with various apects of daily life you could enjoy as a member of the upper classes. Getting up, getting dressed, getting musical, eating, sleeping, you are led through what seems to be one ceremony after another; each aspect done with exquisite style. We noticed that the finds of this collection were not only the elegant objects, but a few paintings by CHARDIN, which were a stark contrast to this life of luxury. Here in CHARDIN’s portaits of the simple daily life of the working classes we were reminded all to clearly about the Revolution in France. Quite simply, the difference between being a noble person, born into the upper classes and enjoying this lifestyle, is only balanced by the serving people who keep your life running smoothly. They were depicted as charming people, surrounded by soft earth tones and everyday objects of the lower reaches of the main houses and chateaux. Yes, this is “Upstairs/Downstairs” French Style.
Missing for us was paintings of rooms, and decor, though a selection of chairs, tables, and other objects were present. The exhibit has closed, but we can recommend a wonderful book about it, for sale online at the museum store. Vive la France!
